File Formats FAQ

Find answers to common questions about file formats, resolution, color modes, and preparing files for printing.

What file format should I use for printing?

PDF is the preferred format for most printing projects. PDF files preserve fonts, colors, and layout. We also accept AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS, INDD (InDesign), and high-resolution images (JPG, PNG). Vector formats (PDF, AI, EPS) are best for text and logos.

What resolution do images need to be?

Images should be at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) for best print quality. Lower resolution images (72-150 DPI) may appear pixelated when printed. For large-format printing like banners, 150 DPI may be acceptable. Vector graphics (AI, EPS) are resolution-independent and always crisp.

What is the difference between CMYK and RGB?

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is for digital displays. CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) is for printing. Always convert files to CMYK before printing to ensure accurate color reproduction. RGB colors may look different when printed. We can convert files if needed.

What are bleeds and why are they important?

Bleeds are extra space (typically 0.125" on all sides) where design elements extend beyond the final trim size. Bleeds ensure no white edges appear if cutting is slightly off. Always include bleeds in your design files for professional results.

Do I need to include crop marks?

Crop marks (trim marks) are helpful but not always required. They show where the final product will be cut. Most design software can add crop marks automatically. If you're unsure, we can add them during file preparation.

Can I use fonts from my computer?

Yes, but fonts should be embedded or outlined in your PDF file. If fonts aren't embedded, we may substitute them, which could change your design. Outlining fonts converts text to shapes, ensuring exact appearance. We recommend outlining fonts for best results.

What file size limits do you have?

We can handle large files, but very large files (over 100MB) may take longer to process. If your file is extremely large, consider compressing images or splitting into multiple files. Contact us if you have concerns about file size.

Can you work with Microsoft Word or PowerPoint files?

While we prefer professional design software files, we can work with Word and PowerPoint files. However, these may require conversion and adjustments. For best results, export to PDF or use design software. We can help prepare files if needed.

What if my file isn't print-ready?

We offer file preparation services for an additional fee. Our team can adjust resolution, convert colors, add bleeds, and optimize files for printing. We'll review your files and let you know if any adjustments are needed before printing.

How do I check if my file is print-ready?

Check that your file is 300 DPI, CMYK color mode, includes bleeds (0.125"), has fonts embedded or outlined, and is in PDF format. If you're unsure, send us your file and we'll review it. We provide feedback and can help prepare files if needed.
