Choosing finishes and options without overcomplicating the job

When to add lamination, coating, or other options—and when to keep the job simple.

In this guide

Finishes and options add cost and sometimes complexity. They also add durability, feel, or function. Choosing the right set depends on use case, not on adding everything "to be safe."

What finishes do

Lamination protects from moisture and abrasion and can add matte or gloss. UV coating adds sheen and some protection. Binding holds multi-page pieces together. Each has a cost and a purpose.

When to add them

Outdoor or handled pieces benefit from lamination. Short-term indoor handouts often do not. Specify the environment and lifespan so your printer can recommend.

Before you add options

• State where and how long the piece will be used.

• Ask which finish is required vs optional for that use.

• Avoid stacking options "just in case"; each adds cost and can affect turnaround.

Common mistake

Adding every available finish because it "looks more professional." Unnecessary options increase price and can complicate production. Match the finish to the use.

How we do it at Print Wave

We recommend finish based on your stated use and lifespan. We do not add lamination or coating by default; we specify what is needed so the job performs without extra cost.
