Edge finishing and why it affects durability

Unfinished edges fray, curl, or delaminate. How hem, weld, and seal affect lifespan.

In this guide

Raw cut edges on vinyl, fabric, or banner material can fray, curl, or allow moisture under the laminate. Edge finishing (hem, weld, or sealed edge) extends life and improves appearance.

Why edges fail

Unfinished edges expose the core or layers to air and moisture. Vinyl can curl; fabric can fray. Once the edge lifts, the rest of the graphic can follow. This is especially important outdoors.

Finishing options

Hemming folds the edge and sews or welds it. Welding seals the edge with heat. Some materials can be sealed with adhesive or tape. The right option depends on material and use.

When to specify edge finishing

• Outdoor or long-term: request hem and/or weld.

• Short-term indoor: raw edge may be acceptable.

• Ask the printer what they recommend for your material and lifespan.

Common mistake

Ordering a long-term outdoor banner with raw cut edges. The edges will curl or fray and shorten the life of the piece. Specify hemmed or welded edges for outdoor use.
