Indoor vs outdoor materials: how to decide

Indoor and outdoor use impose different demands. Wrong material fails faster or costs more than necessary.

In this guide

Outdoor materials must resist UV, moisture, and temperature change. Indoor materials do not need that level of durability; using outdoor-grade indoors can be unnecessary cost.

Outdoor requirements

Vinyl, laminate, and substrate choices for outdoor use are rated for exposure. Uncoated or indoor-only media will fade, curl, or delaminate when used outside. Check the product rating for exterior use.

Indoor-only options

Paper, uncoated vinyl, and some foams are fine for controlled indoor environments. They are often cheaper than outdoor-rated options. Using them outside will shorten lifespan and can void expectations.

Deciding factors

• Will it be in sun, rain, or temperature swings?

• Expected lifespan (weeks vs years)?

• Will it be handled or only viewed from a distance?

Common mistake

Using an indoor material outdoors to save money. Replacement and rework usually erase the savings. Specify the environment and let the printer recommend the right grade.

How we do it at Print Wave

We recommend substrate and finish based on where and how long the piece will be used. We do not substitute indoor-grade for outdoor applications without your agreement.
