Ignoring the install environment

Indoor vs outdoor, wind, sun, and surface matter. Specifying the wrong environment leads to failure.

In this guide

Print that is specified for the wrong environment fails: indoor material outdoors fades and curls; outdoor material in a controlled lobby is overkill. The install location and conditions drive material and finish choice.

What we need to know

Indoor or outdoor. If outdoor: sun exposure, wind, and expected lifespan. Surface: smooth, textured, or curved. Whether the piece will be removed or reused. Without this we guess, and guessing leads to wrong substrate or adhesive.

What goes wrong when you skip it

We may quote an indoor product for an outdoor install. The piece fails and you reorder. Or we quote outdoor when you need indoor only; you pay for durability you do not need.

Before you order

• State install location: indoor, outdoor, or both.

• State expected lifespan and any special conditions (high wind, direct sun).

• Describe the surface if it affects adhesive or mounting.

Common mistake

Ordering "the same as last time" without confirming the install. Last time may have been different. Always specify the environment for this job.

How we do it at Print Wave

We ask for install environment and lifespan before we recommend substrate and finish. We do not assume indoor or outdoor; we confirm so the product is right for the location.
